From November 11 to November 16, the halls of Providence overflowed with red, white, and blue to celebrate Veterans Week. Veterans Week is “about honoring those who’ve made sacrifices and recognizing that we all have a role in building a stronger, united, and patriotic community,” says Mrs. Grigoletti.
Mrs. Grigoletti and Mrs. Sallade organized many of the Veterans Week activities, including all-school prayers led by veterans, a supply drive for Will County veterans, an honor walk on Friday, and the Hall of Honor displaying the names of veterans connected to Providence. “At Providence, we want our students to really understand the sacrifices made by the men and women who’ve served in the armed forces,” says Mrs. Grigoletti. “It’s not just about history – that is important. It’s also about showing gratitude and learning to take pride in being part of something bigger – our nation.”
Originally called Armistice Day, the holiday first honored only veterans of WWI. In 1954, the commemoration was renamed Veterans Day and expanded to honor the contributions of all veterans. Because of this, many people have a deep personal connection to Veterans Day. “Veterans Day has always been important to me – my husband enlisted in the US Marine Corp, my son is an Army reservist, and I have many uncles, great uncles and grandfathers who served during wartime as well,” Mrs. Grigoletti notes. “I think it’s an important time for us to reflect on what it means to love our country and be grateful for the freedoms we enjoy.”
On behalf of the Proviscope staff, thank you to all of our veterans!
