The Fiasco that was the Golden Globes

The Fiasco that was the Golden Globes

Calling the Golden Globes a disaster is quite an understatement. From a terrible host with distasteful comedy to awkward moments overall, the 81st Golden Globes will be one to remember.

First, the host, Jo Koy, had some questionable jokes throughout the night. The jokes were somewhat decent because he was hired at the last minute when no other host could do the show. However, one of his worst jokes of the night was about Barbie. He stated, “Oppenheimer is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project,” where Barbie was just a doll with large breasts. Later, he stated, “The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet. Or what casting directors call character actor!” He was heavily criticized for making this joke, especially since many consider the movie Barbie was meant to fight this stereotype. Later, he blamed the joke writers for his lack of time. He also took a shot at Taylor Swift, saying that the only thing on the football screens was her. She looked dissatisfied with the joke and took a sip of her drink, which led the media to make a big deal out of a little reaction.

However, all was not lost that night. There were many great winners at the award show. The best motion picture for Drama went to Oppenheimer, and the best motion picture for musical and comedy went to Poor Things. Emma Stone received the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture for Musical and Comedy in Poor Things. The best original song was ” What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas from the movie Barbie. This, along with many other awards, defined the night.

While the 81st Golden Globes may have been awful, the hard work and effort of those who won the awards and were nominated cannot be ignored.
