Marching Celtics Make “Noise” During Successful Season

The PCHS marching band performed last Saturday as the sun rose over Hancock Stadium at ISU. The group had been awake since 2:30 that morning and, despite their equipment trailer getting two flat tires from road debris, made it to ISU at 4:30 and was ready to perform by 7:00. Despite all the stress – and despite competing against bands over five times their size – the band took 6th place in Class 2A.

Mr. Baltzer directs the Marching Celtics. Their show this year is titled Noise and includes music from “Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel and “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC. The play centers on how “noise” from friends, family, and social media can impact a high school student and how music can help people find calm. Noise is a very personal show for Providence, as Mrs. Zlogar and the art department helped paint props, and band students created audio recordings to supplement the music.

Overall, Noise‘s competitive run was very successful, placing in all local competitions and first placing in Class 1A at the Victor J. Andrew Marching Invitational. The show also won Best Percussion, Best Visual, and Best General Effect at the Andrew Invitational and Best Percussion at the Lincoln-Way Marching Invitational.

Reflecting on the season, color guard captain and junior M. Ullsmith said, “I feel like the band grew a lot closer together over the season, and that helped us work to achieve our goals.” Field captain and junior Anna Gleason added, “The band is a great place to make lifelong friends and have fun learning to play an instrument.”

The Marching Celtics are incredibly proud of their season and want to wish their seniors good luck in their future endeavors. Congratulations, Marching Celtics!
