As the 2026 season for the Providence Catholic Winter Guard fast approaches, the Proviscope would like to commemorate and honor the success this young team has accomplished in the past year. Originally overlooked at this Augustinian school, the sport has quickly become a curiosity for many. Last year, the team perfected their skills and took the competitions by storm, remaining undefeated in their normal season. This year, the bar is high and so is the team’s hope for future successes.
Winter Guard International was founded in 1977 in San Francisco, California. It became the governing body of color guard and established the sport outside of marching band, recognizing talent in the post-fall season. Winter guard involves an assortment of dance and acrobatic skills, as well as twirling and spinning instruments such as flags, rifles, sabers, batons, and ribbons. It requires skill and concentration to move equipment as extensions of the body. Achieving the level of flexibility and competency needed for basic tosses and tricks takes many months. Winter guard demands hours of weekly practice, just like any sport, and it is expected to increase in peer-popularity by next year.
The Providence Catholic Winter Guard team has accomplished very much, despite its shortage of members. In the 2025 season, the team only consisted of 9 members, whereas, on average, most winter guard teams consist of approximately 20 members. However, the team still achieved astonishing accomplishments such as placing 1st place in the SRA (Scholastic Regional A) class WGI (Winter Guard International) Regional Competition and then moving on to placing 1st in the SRA class U.S. as well as placing 2nd in SRA class WGI Virtual World. Their show, “Leave a Light On,” was about holding on to loved ones and providing them with comfort and care. Specifically, it was targeted towards those suffering from addiction. Moving into the upcoming season, the 2026 show, “Disengage,” will be about leaving relationships filled with toxicity.
The members of Providence Winter Guard have been working very hard to prepare their winter show. Peers and parents eagerly await the newest show. While it is sad to part from the previous show, this season will present just as much excitement as the last. Understanding the effort and dedication that each member puts in reveals what the sport is all about.
