The Providence Catholic’s girls’ volleyball team has had a long and unsuccessful history, but this season was a historic one for the varsity girls. They have the team’s best record in over five years, going 35-7 this season, with a 5-1 record in conference. This record led them to finish in 3rd place in the conference. When the playoffs rolled around, Providence was ready to take on the best teams in the state. Winning the early rounds, Providence made it to the semifinals of the class 3A state tournament. Coming into this with a win over Washington, the girls were feeling eager to possibly have the chance to play in the state final. They were set to play Nazareth in the semifinals. However, despite their hard fighting, they fell short to Nazareth in two sets. Despite this loss, Providence still had a chance to play for the third place in state trophy. They were going to play Prairie Ridge, who had lost to Normal University in the other semifinal game. The game for third place was set, and Providence went up early, winning the first set. Prairie Ridge came back, winning the second set, but Providence was ready and they won the third set by a convincing amount. Falling a little short of the title, the girls still had a historic season, taking third in the class 3A state final.
We asked Abbey Knight, a senior captain on the team a few questions about the season:
- What is your favorite memory from this state run, either on or off the court?
“My favorite memory from state is when the small bus broke down on our way back from dinner and we all had to pile in one bus back to the hotel. It was a true bonding moment.”
- What was different about this team than years past?
“This team was different because they had the fight and everyone had the same goal and mindset. It’s easy to work with a team when everyone is on the same page and ready to go. Everyone worked hard and never took a rep for granted.”
